Loose powder and compact powder, what's the difference with setting powder?
Loose powder and compact powder: Loose powder, as the name suggests, is loose and comes in a box; some are also made into the shape of a compact, which is known as loose compact. Loose powder is a type of facial beauty makeup product, professionally known as "setting powder," also called "finishing powder" or "translucent powder." It does not contain oil and is made entirely of powdered ingredients. It is mainly used after applying foundation cream or foundation lotion for touch-ups and reapplication to adjust skin tone, prevent excessive shine or stickiness, reduce sweat and sebum production, enhance the longevity of makeup products, create a soft velvety texture on the skin. Some loose powders also have certain sun protection properties. Additionally, loose powders cannot be used alone.
Compact powders themselves have certain concealing effects; usually two-way compacts can achieve similar effects to foundations when used wet so there's no need for additional use of loose powders afterwards. Compact powders are pressed into cake-like form and placed in a mirrored container. There are two main production methods for compact powders: wet method and dry method.
Loose Powder vs Setting Powder: Setting Powder refers to both loose translucent setting powders that come in various shades but generally provide lighter coverage compared to traditional pressed setting/compact powders which offer more coverage due to their denser nature.
In conclusion:
- Both types help control oil & sweat.
- Use setting/loose/translucent finishing/powder over your liquid foundation.
- Pressed versions can be carried around easily.
- Translucent versions work well on all skin tones while colored ones may offer better color correction benefits than translucent options.
